What is granite
Granite is a common igneous rock. It is a widely occurring group of intrusive felsic rock. It forms at great depths and pressures under the continents. To know what is granite, you must understand that a granite usually has a medium to coarse grained texture. On some occasions, when the some of the crystals are somewhat larger than the groundmass, the texture in that case is porphyritic. What is granite rock with such a texture?
That granite is called porphyry. What is granite color usually? The color of granite depends on what is granite chemistry and mineralogy. The color of granite can be from pink to gray. Granite is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz by volume. Granite also consists of orthoclase and plagioclase feldspars, muscovite, biotite and other minor accessory minerals like gamet, apatite, magnetite, and zircon. To know what is granite you should also know that it differs from granodiorite. Ordinary granite will always carry small amount of plagioclase. When this is absent in granite, it is referred to as alkali granite. An increasing proportion of the plagioclase feldspar will cause the granite to become granodiorite. At least 35% of feldspar in granite is alkali feldspar compared to plagioclase. Many of the granites get the distinct pink color from alkali feldspar. What is granite which consists of equal proportions of plagioclase and orthoclase along with quartz? That rock may be considered as a quartz monzonite. Granite which contains both biotite and muscovite is called binary granite. If you know what is granite, you should also know that its average density is between 2.65 and 2.75 g/cm3.
